How often do you walk into a practioner’s office afraid of feeling judged? What will they say about my weight? My blood pressure? Will my PT scold me for not keeping up with my exercises this week? Will my massage therapist notice the pimple on my back?
I frequently have had patients look at me while I find the points and apologetically say, “oh, I haven’t shaved this week!” or “I’m sorry, I ran earlier and didn’t get a shower in”. Or, the mom who sighs as she notices the baby spit up dried to her shirt.
To my patients I say, this is your time. This is for you and you come exactly as you are. I’m not thinking about your shaving regimen and I’m not judging how well you stuck to your lifestyle plan this week. When you can be your whole you
with me, then that is when the healing can begin. Life can be messy and in the days of social media we often can feel like a blip of imperfection in a sea of perfection. But it’s those imperfections that actually make us perfect.
When I look at you, I see you as perfect exactly how you are. I’m not here to fix you. We’re humans, not cars and you are not broken. This is a partnership and we are in it together to work through your challenges and help you live your best life.
It is an honor to be able to be a practioner and a privilege that is never taken for granted. Thank you for allowing me to be with you through your joys, accomplishments, frustrations, sadness and challenges. My promise to you in return is to make the treatment room a space of healing where you can bring your whole self, exactly as you are, and you will be heard, seen, safe and supported.
