Cold and Flu Season

Cold and flu season is happening. What are you doing to stay healthy this winter?

One of the best things we can do is slow down and get the rest we need. Often we feel something coming on and try to power through. Sometimes your body getting sick is simply its way of telling you, "you weren't going to take the rest that you needed, so I made you slow down and stay in bed". In the winter we naturally want to be more yin, sleep more and be a little less active. The more we can honor this, the better our energy will be come spring and the less likely we will be to get sick.

Keep moving but bundle up. It can sound like an old wives tale, but keeping the cold and wind off of you, especially off the back of your neck can make a big difference in keeping off a cold. One of the most common things I see is people not getting enough movement and enough time outside in the winter. Our body still needs regular movement to stay healthy and a dose of natural Vitamin D. Getting outside for a walk is a great way to accomplish this, just don't forget your scarf!

Sweets and breads can be oh so tempting this time of year. A little indulgence never hurts but it's important to remember to keep up enough fruits and vegetables too, to get the vitamins you need to stay healthy. As I am sure you have seen me write, cooked vegetables are more optimal than raw ones this time of year.

Moxa is also a good way to warm up and build your immune system. This herb is simmered over the skin, allowing the old to seek in. It is warming and nourishing.
