Acupuncture FAQS
WHAT WILL MY FIRST SESSION BE LIKE?
Your first session is typically an hour and a half long. We take a thorough history that is focused on body, mind and spirit. During this time we learn about your current concerns, health history and treatment goals. We utilize multiple Chinese assessment tools, such as pulse reading and looking at the tongue to accurately diagnose your condition. You also will receive a needle treatment your first session. You may also receive cupping, moxa and/or gua sha if appropriate. If nutrition, movement, sleep hygiene or lifestyle advice is something that you are interested in, that can also be discussed.
DO YOU TREAT PATIENTS WITH SEVERE HEALTH PROBLEMS?
Yes. Since acupuncture treats at the root cause of disease, it has the ability to treat a wide variety of conditions. People with significant health concerns will benefit as will people in overall good health. The severity of the condition, and length of time that the person has had it, may affect the amount of treatments needed and will help determine the goals for treatment.
DO YOU HELP TREAT TERMINAL OR CHRONIC ILLNESS?
Yes, in fact, acupuncture and Chinese herbs are often called upon in chronic conditions where other modalities have been exhausted. Acupuncture is very supportive for terminal illness as well because it can work at the emotional and spiritual level and is beneficial for emotional coping and pain relief. Acupuncture is also great supportive medicine for bereaved family members or to reduce caregiver stress and fatigue.
DOES IT HURT?
Pain is much more minimal than you would expect with acupuncture. The needles are very thin and are not hollow. They are very different than needles you may be use to! Most people report minimal to no pain during treatment. For those that are very sensitive to needles and pain, and for young children, alternatives are available.
WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BEFORE AND AFTER TREATMENT?
Before treatment please be sure you have had some food and liquids. We provide beverages and snacks in our lobby that you are welcome to. After, it is OK to return your daily tasks but it is certainly nice if you can rest or take a light walk after. You may dress to your comfort. Some patients prefer to wear loose fitting clothes to avoid removing them in treatment. We encourage you to come however you are most comfortable.
WHAT TYPES OF PAYMENT OR INSURANCE DO YOU ACCEPT?
We accept all major credit cards, FSA or HSA cards, cash or check. We are happy to provide superbills for FSA, HSA or reimbursement purposes. We are currently not in network with any insurance company.
